Starting a New Journal ? Which Format Do you Use, Digital or Analog?

It’s the beginning of a new year, which for a lot of people, means that it is time to start a new journal or diary. I’ve been wrestling with the decision of whether to stay traditional and keep my journal in a Moleskine, Rhodia or similar notebook, or go digital and use a diary app [...]

Shameless Self-Promotion: Sean (on Al Jazeera) talks about Africa?s oldest liberation movement turning 100

This week 100 years ago, South Africa?s current ruling party, the African National Congress or ANC was born. It would go on to dominate resistance politics against Apartheid. Many assume today?s ANC is very different from that of its founders or its high points in the 1950s and later through the 1980s and 1990s. ?Does South Africa?s ruling ANC still fight for the same values it championed 100 years ago?? was the theme for Al Jazeera English program, ?The Stream? yesterday. The producers invited me help answer this and other questions about the ANC so I traveled down to Washington D.C. The show is presented by Derek Ashong. (Remember him?) He was joined by guest host Latoya Patterson (she?s also a blogger at Racialicious). The show is live, fast paced and incorporates social media. Unfortunately technical difficulties meant it was hard to hear the inputs of the other 2 guests?Keith Khoza, ANC spokesperson, and journalist and commentator Karima Brown? linked to the studio via Skype. The video, above, of the show also includes a 10-minute post-show which was streamed online after the TV channel returned to its regular programming. It?s riveting stuff.

Thanks to producer Melissa Giaimo for inviting me.

Oh, and my wife takes credit for suggesting I wear the nice pink shirt.

* With that we?re open for blogging in 2012.

Ex-minister urges Russian parliamentary vote rerun (AP)

MOSCOW ? A former Cabinet member close to Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin is calling for a rerun of the country's fraud-tinged parliamentary elections.

Former Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin said in his blog Friday that the government must open a dialogue with the opposition on holding a repeat ballot under a revised electoral law.

Kudrin's statement appears aimed at bolstering Putin, whose bid to reclaim the presidency in March elections has been undermined by the public outrage over last month's parliamentary vote.

Kudrin said authorities must acknowledge that the Dec. 4 parliamentary election was unfair, warning that failure to do so would undermine the legitimacy of the presidential vote.

LG Elec says joins Google to roll out Google TV

SEOUL | Fri Jan 6, 2012 1:54am EST

SEOUL (Reuters) - LG Electronics Inc said on Friday it would unveil its first Google TV next week, joining Sony Corp and Samsung Electronics Co in partnering with the search giant to get a foothold in the emerging Internet TV market.

Google hopes to replicate the success of its Android mobile software in the TV market, but its attempt to conquer the living room has seen limited success so far due to a lack of web content and support from hardware manufacturers.

Google TV allows consumers to access online videos and websites on their TVs, as well as specialized apps such as video games. Currently it comes built-in on certain Sony television models and Samsung is also working with the U.S. firm to launch Google TVs.

LG said on Friday it would introduce its first Google TV next week at the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Google said on its blog that chipmaker Marvell Technology Group, chip designer MediaTek and TV manufacturer Vizio were also new partners for its Google TV service.

Grappling with slowing demand and cutthroat competition, TV manufacturers hope forays into the Internet TV market will help cushion squeezed margins.

Research firm DisplaySearch expects the global TV market to grow only 2 percent this year after no growth in 2011 due to soft consumer demand amid a weak global economy.

China sets up state-level aerospace research institute

A research institute focusing on the development of the country's aerospace engineering technologies was jointly founded by the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASTC) on Saturday.

The institute, which will study and provide consultative services regarding aerospace engineering development strategies and national special aerospace programs, marks the country's first state-level strategic research and consultative organization in this area.

The institute is also joined by the country's leading companies, colleges and other research institutions in aerospace-related fields.

"The move will promote the development of the aerospace engineering sector, strategically-important industries, and the application of advanced aerospace technologies," said Ma Xingrui, general manager of the CASTC.

Economic data gives fragile boost to stocks, euro (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? Resilience in the manufacturing sector and a surprise drop in German unemployment lifted global stocks and the euro on Tuesday but positive sentiment is seen vulnerable to a daunting schedule of first quarter debt issuance in Europe.

German unemployment fell more than expected in December, by 22,000 from the previous month to a seasonally adjusted 2.888 million, new data showed. The jobless rate edged down to 6.8 percent from 6.9 percent in November - a new record low since figures for unified Germany were first published.

"Firms are still willing to keep hiring. But we must brace ourselves for a deterioration on the labor market from the spring," said Commerzbank economist Eckart Tuchtfeld.

Europe's debt crisis still clouds the outlook, with heavy first quarter borrowing to refinance maturing debt expected to push the euro lower and undermine demand for the region's lower-rated sovereign debt.

"The maturing of debt is going to give investors the opportunity to take some of those funds back out of Europe, to repatriate some of those funds to reduce their exposure," said Ian Stannard, currency strategist at Morgan Stanley.

Signs of improved growth in the United States may also cool any speculation about another round of money-printing by the Federal Reserve, improving the outlook for the dollar.

The euro rose about 0.8 percent against the dollar to around $1.3030, but stayed within striking distance of its 2011 trough of $1.2858 hit last week.

The MSCI world equity index (.MIWD00000PUS) was up over 0.5 percent.

MANUFACTURING RESILIENCE

Recent slight rises in purchasing managers' indexes for China and the euro zone [nL3E8C20K] have encouraged risk appetite, especially in commodity markets.

China's official Purchasing Managers' Index rose to 50.3 in December from 49 in November - moving above the 50 mark which separates expansion from contraction.

Data on Tuesday also showed the official Purchasing Managers' Index for non-manufacturing sectors had rebounded strongly in December to 56.0 from 49.7 in November.

British manufacturing also beat expectations in December, showing signs of stabilizing after a two-month decline as orders from China and Germany picked up, data on Tuesday showed.

Investors will closely watch the ISM Manufacturing PMI data in the United States, due at 1500 GMT, for further signs of recovery in the world's biggest economy, with economists in a Reuters survey expecting a reading of 53.2 versus 52.7 in November.

"The data we've seen coming from the U.S. has actually surprised on the upside over the past few weeks and I think that's going to continue," said Morgan Stanley's Stannard.

The pick-up in the PMIs encouraged European stocks to a fourth consecutive session of gains. The FTSEurofirst 300 (.FTEU3) index of top European shares was up 0.7 percent at 1019.38 points after rising as high as 1,022.85, its highest level in more than two months.

The heavily commodity-weighted UK FTSE 100 (.FTSE) index was up 1.2 percent, lifted by strong gains in mining companies Xstrata (XTA.L) and Kazakhmys (KAZ.L), both up nearly 4 percent in early trade.

COMMODITIES RALLY

U.S. crude jumped nearly 2.5 percent to over $110 a barrel, in response to the escalating tensions between Iran and the West.

Military exercises in the Mideast Gulf by Iran and the movement of U.S. naval vessels in the area raised fears of a confrontation between Tehran and Washington that could cut off oil exports from the region.

Spot gold rose as much as 1.4 percent to $1,586.95 earlier on Tuesday, also helped by investors renewed appetite for riskier assets.
