Hughes wins 4th straight, Yanks rout Nats

WASHINGTON (AP) - The New York Yankees came into Washington on a six-game winning streak to face a team that was just as hot. Holding a one-run lead after six innings, the Yankees scored five late runs for a relatively easy win.
Curtis Granderson drove in three runs, Derek Jeter had two hits and Phil Hughes pitched six innings to win his fourth straight start, and New York won its seventh game in a row, beating the Washington Nationals 7-2 on Friday night.
"It's one of those things where the first couple of at-bats don't go the way you want them to, you keep your head up and adjust as the game goes on," Granderson said.
"If it's not your first at-bat, it's your second, third or fourth at-bat. Never give up an at-bat."
Granderson had a two-run double in a four-run seventh and hit his 20th home run in the ninth.
Both teams entered with six-game winning streaks and leading their divisions. For the Nationals, the attention was unusual, the stands were packed, with many rooting for the Yankees.
Hughes (7-5) worked six innings, allowing a run and six hits. He walked two and struck out nine. Cody Eppley and Clay Rapada worked two scoreless innings. David Robertson allowed a run in the ninth.
"We knew that they were playing really well," Hughes said. "Thankfully, we scored some runs."
Gio Gonzalez (8-3) allowed three runs and five hits in six-plus innings, walking two and striking out eight. He is 1-5 against the Yankees and left trailing 2-1 after allowing a leadoff single to Andruw Jones in the seventh.
Granderson, Hughes and Jeter helped manager Joe Girardi win his 500th game in the major leagues - 422 with the Yankees.
Girardi received the game ball from the team and said he appreciated it, but was more focused on the game.
"We didn't have a ton of opportunities off Gio, but the one inning, we got a couple two-out hits. Then we broke the game open obviously a little later on, but we've been getting important hits," Girardi said.
Jeter joked that 500 wins as a manager is different with the Yankees.
"That's a big deal. Five hundred is like 750 in New York," he said.
Against Brad Lidge in the seventh, pinch-runner Dewayne Wise stole second, Russell Martin walked, and both advanced on Jayson Nix's sacrifice bunt. Robinson Cano was intentionally walked and Jeter hit a slow grounder to shortstop Ian Desmond.
As Jeter crossed first, Desmond's throw sailed past first baseman Adam LaRoche. Wise and Martin scored. Michael Gonzalez relieved Lidge and allowed Granderson's two-run double to make it 6-1.
"We opened the door for them, and that's what happens," Nationals manager Davey Johnson said.
"You just can't mistakes on this club," Johnson said. "It's a learning curve."
The Yankees scored two runs in the third. Jeter doubled with one out. After Mark Teixeira walked with two outs, Alex Rodriguez singled to score Jeter. The RBI was A-Rod's 1,924th, tying him with Jimmie Foxx for sixth place on the all-time list. Nick Swisher followed with an RBI single.
Steve Lombardozzi and Bryce Harper began the bottom of the third with singles off Hughes. With one out, LaRoche walked to load the bases. Michael Morse's single scored Lombardozzi.
The five-run loss was disheartening, but the Nationals, who began Friday in first place by 4 1-2 games, hope the large, enthusiastic crowds continue.
"We all love to play in those kinds of atmospheres," third baseman Ryan Zimmerman said. "I think we haven't had a chance to play in many of them in the seven years I've been here, but it's always fun when you get to get out there and play in what I think playoff baseball would feel like."

MSU Dinosaurs: Down the Rabbit Hole We Go
Selected college students from across Montana travel to the Zhejiang Province of China on a National Science Fund program from May 17 ? June 19, 2012. The students will be exposed to the culture and people of China as a way of broadening their worldview. The cultural exposure is secondary, however, to the research and study of dinosaur eggs at the Zhejiang Natural History Museum. This now marks the third year for this program and the 2012 research team consists of Dr. David Varricchio, Hannah Wilson, Michael Bustamante, Ian Underwood, Paul Germano, Heather Davis, Anita Moore-Nall, Bob Rader, Danny Barta, and Christian Heck
Introduction, methods, results, conclusions. These are the subjects that will form our paper. The introduction provides background information on the subject and introduces the reader to our study. The methods and results, well, that?s self-explanatory. That brings us to conclusions. Conclusions (or Discussion depending on which you prefer?and sometimes they are split into two sections!) are where we have to make sense of it all. This may seem like an easy task at first, because the results should show us all we need to know right? Nope.

Let?s take Hannah and I?s project as an example. We start off with results on the compression of eggs. Easy enough. This is followed by possible explanations for the compaction the eggs seemed to suffer through. This is where one can get lost going deeper and deeper into the rabbit hole. Sediment overlay, transport, micro-faults, etc., etc. could be explanations for the compaction. Then we have to figure out if there is a way to arrange the clutch back to its original orientation. But what if the eggs were laid in a hole? What if they were transported prior to compaction? What if they were hatched, and how does that affect amount of compaction? What if a disgruntled dinosaur merely stepped on all of them? We have to consider everything when reconstructing the taphonomic histories of these eggs.

One of the most important areas of research is the use of field observations and their incorporation within the study. We were lucky enough to be presented with specimens collected with proper stratigraphic data and in-situ orientation (remember those things from a few posts ago?). Although it?s only two specimens, they are of immense importance in our study. They could essentially raise our results to another level or tear down the foundation of our study. For our project on orientation, the specimens arose to the occasion and supported our data. True results and conclusions will have to wait until data from other groups is collected.

Anita Moore-Nall?s research on reduction spots can provide further support for our results and Ian Underwood?s work on eggshell thickness variation is useful as well. The Hatching Window team?s research on defining a window has implications for level of compaction. Ian?s eggshell thickness studies could explain locations of hatching windows. Anita?s research could provide an explanation for eggshell thinning. Danny?s cladistics studies places all of our work within a framework of phylogenetics. We came to China as a group, split into teams, researched, measured different aspects of eggs, and at the end, all of our team studies will come together to help the entire group. That is what collaboration is all about.

The excel sheets have been saved, citations have been found, calipers put away, specimens returned to collections, samples taken, goodbyes have been said, and bags packed. We?ve spent three weeks in Hangzhou calling the museum our home (and the hotel our second home). A week of rain, bugs, and fieldwork out in Tiantai and Dongyang gave everyone a glimpse of fieldwork. We?ve traveled through larger-than-life cities such as Shanghai (and soon Beijing) to small agriculture towns for fieldwork. Culture shock came and went, and we?re all better for our experiences here.

Dolby confirms 14 theaters for inaugural screening of Pixar's 'Brave' with Atmos audio

The lead single from Kendrick Lamar's major-label debut, "The Recipe," includes a feature from his mentor Dr. Dre. And when the video for the Good Kid in a Mad City track drops, the Compton native will be giving the world a taste of his own brand of "California Love."
Kendrick filmed his video for "The Recipe" at a mansion in the Los Angeles last month, and after performing the single at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Tennessee last week, he explained his vision behind the clip.
"I felt like there hasn't been that 'California Love'-type feel since the '90s, and I really wanted to display that and represent where I'm from," he told MTV News. "So I had a whole bunch of beautiful women, good weather — it was like 85 degrees and breezy — and we had [ScHoolboy] Q up in there stealing some of Snoop's weed, him and Ab-Soul, and we had fun."
If Kendrick is hoping to tap into the nostalgia of Tupac's infamous 1995 track "California Love," it helps that he's got two of the original California legends in his corner: Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. "The Recipe" will boast his most extravagant visuals to date, and the 25-year-old rap prodigy is ready to take his career to another level.
"We're here to spread this music all across the world," he said. "It started in my backyard, in Compton, and now I'm fittin' to take it to the next level and take it worldwide because I feel like the world needs to hear this. I've been ready for a long time."
Fun fact: When the song debuted, Dr. Dre revealed that it once had a more straightforward title, telling Big Boy on L.A.'s Power 106 morning show, "The original title was 'Women, Weed and Weather.' That's what represents L.A."
