Effective Landing Page Conversion Boosters To Use In PPC ...

December 20th, 2012 | Posted in Adwords campaign, Affilate Funnel System, Article Marketing, Earn Through Internet

Figuring out how to optimize your landing pages for PPC campaigns will be the most profitable endeavors you can do. This process is not at all hard to put into motion, and there are surprisingly few tasks involved. The simple reason for doing this is that your profits and conversions will only continue to increase. Anytime you are just starting out with something new, it is often easy to feel like you are just treading water. Anyone with experience in earn a living from home will understand what we mean and maybe even have a chuckle about it.

The primary reason for using freelance help is to allow for more time on activities that directly impact revenue. If that is something that gets your attention, and it should, then you will be delighted to find out what is in store for you. Get some reputable information about outsourcing, just as an example, because there are a few tricks you will want to know beforehand. Not just in the case of bringing on contracted-out help, but with anything you have to get it done but also done smartly.

There are many pitfalls waiting for you with a landing page, and getting your navigation right will be one more you can avoid. You should always strive for a very clean landing page, and so simply take out those links and panels you know are not required. Not everybody uses any kind of logo, and if you do not use one then do not place one anywhere. The copy you choose to include does not need to be long at all, and typically many landing pages have the bare amount. If you look around and notice successful PPC campaigns, you?ll see that most of them have landing pages that have little or no navigation ? so take a lesson from them and optimize your landing page accordingly.

It can be fine to use slang in your copy, but do not go overboard and be sure everyone will understand. You have to perform market research and get to know what your audience is comfortable reading. Keep in mind the reading habits of the online surfer, and what they always do is skip around and quickly scan. What you want to do is write paragraphs that are not as long as you may normally see. Benefit bullets are extremely effective when they are written properly, so be sure to use them.

If what you are offering people to opt in is highly desirable, then you will see great results. Never use a cheap offer of something you thought of at the last minute.

The more specific and hard to find your offer is, the more people will want it. The more you can help your self to be seen and unique, the better chance you have to convert. Your future business growth depends on how strong your giveaway offer is. You can do so much more that will produce highly effective landing pages.

Republicans put squeeze on Obama in "fiscal cliff" talks

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Frustrated by their inability to wring more "fiscal cliff" concessions out of President Barack Obama, Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives announced Tuesday night that they expect to pass their own tax bill as a backup plan to avert the tax hikes and automatic budget cuts set to occur in January.

No one expects the bill, which would extend low tax rates except on income of $1 million and above, to pass the Democratic-controlled Senate. President Barack Obama's latest position puts the threshold for income tax hikes at $400,000.

While the move, called "Plan B" by Republicans, may not prompt Obama to give further ground in his negotiations with House Speaker John Boehner, it could allow Republicans to argue they did what they could to stop tax hikes and the full impact of the "fiscal cliff," which the Congressional Budget Office and economists have said could trigger another recession.

"Why not put on the floor something that's what most Americans think the president is talking about, which is protecting from tax increases everybody but truly millionaires and billionaires?," said Republican Representative Pat Tiberi of Ohio.

When it dies in the Senate, he said, "that's not our problem. We can't be held responsible for what the Senate does."

Polls have consistently suggested that the public is likely to blame Republicans for failure to reach a deal ahead of the December 31 deadline for action.

After important concessions in recent days from both Obama and Boehner, Republicans expressed frustration that the president had not moved further.

The White House seemed unconcerned by the Republican tactic, and stressed Obama's willingness to compromise further.

"The president has demonstrated an obvious willingness to compromise and move more than halfway toward the Republicans," White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters, adding that Obama is making a "good faith" effort to reach a compromise.

Still, the mood on Capitol Hill was guardedly optimistic.

Global stocks advanced to their highest levels since September. Investors shifted funds to stocks and the euro and pulled away from safe-harbor assets such as bonds, gold and the U.S. dollar.

"They've still got a long way to go, but you can't help but say that the odds are better today than they were on Friday that we'll get some sort of agreement," said Oklahoma Republican Representative Tom Cole.

Hopes of an accord rose Monday night after Obama made a concession with his offer to limit tax increases to incomes exceeding $400,000 per household. That is a higher threshold than the $250,000 that the president had sought earlier.

Boehner, the top Republican in Congress, had earlier conceded on Obama's insistence that tax rates rise on the wealthiest Americans, but the two have been unable to agree on what income levels should be included in that category.

Analysts said Obama and Boehner may strike a compromise at $500,000 or close to that, though time was running short.

One House Republican aide, asked about prospects for "Plan B" on the House floor, said: "It wouldn't be surprising ... if a lot of conservatives balk at something like that." The House's second ranking Republican, Eric Cantor, said he was confident his party members in the House would back the bill.

'WE CAN DO BETTER'

Even as he presented the measure, Boehner said he would continue to negotiate with Obama on a broader agreement.

"Plan B is Plan B for a reason. It's a less-than-ideal outcome. I've always believed we can do better," Boehner said.

The expiration of low tax rates enacted under former President George W. Bush is a key component of the "fiscal cliff" that lawmakers are trying to prevent from taking hold next month, along with deep automatic government spending cuts.

Often challenged by the conservative wing of his caucus, Boehner held Republican lawmakers together in support of his efforts to forge a deal with Obama. The speaker emerged largely unscathed from a potentially tough meeting with his fellow House Republicans on Tuesday morning.

Representative Darrell Issa, a key committee chairman, said his fellow House Republicans "were supportive of the speaker. ... I saw no one there get up and say, 'I can't support the speaker.'"

With opinion polls showing broad support in the United States for raising taxes on the wealthiest Americans and Obama still buoyed by his re-election last month, the Republicans' traditional opposition to tax hikes has waned somewhat.

The Obama-Boehner talks have largely overcome stark ideological differences and are focused increasingly on narrower disagreements over numbers.

COST-OF-LIVING INCREASES

Obama also may face unrest from within his party. Liberal Democrats were likely to oppose a key compromise he has offered to permit shrinking cost-of-living increases for all but the most vulnerable beneficiaries of the Social Security retirement program. His proposal calls for using a different formula, known as "chained Consumer Price Index," to determine the regular cost-of-living increases, essentially reducing benefits.

"I am committed to standing against any benefit cuts to programs Americans rely on, and tying Social Security benefits to chained CPI is a benefit cut," Democratic Representative Keith Ellison said in a statement.

Obama also moved closer to Boehner on the proportion of a 10-year deficit reduction package that should come from increased revenue, as opposed to cuts in government spending. Obama is now willing to accept a revenue figure of $1.2 trillion, down from his previous $1.4 trillion proposal.

Boehner's latest proposal calls for $1 trillion in new tax revenue from higher tax rates and the curbing of some tax deductions taken by high-income Americans.

Missing from Obama's latest offer was any extension of the so-called "payroll tax holiday" that ends on January 1, bringing an immediate tax increase on wage earners.

Possible plans to produce cuts in spending for Medicare and Medicaid, the government health insurance programs for seniors and low-income Americans respectively, remained to be discussed.

Boehner and Obama have made headway on the politically explosive question of the president's ability to avoid constant battles over raising the nation's debt ceiling, which controls the level of borrowing by the government. Boehner is ready to give Obama a year of relative immunity from conservative strife over the debt ceiling, while Obama is pushing for two years.

ESPN Scorecenter for Android Receives Complete UI Overhaul

ESPN?s Scorecenter app received a major update today, one that includes a complete UI overhaul. As seen in the screenshots below, you now have a cleaner panel-to-panel viewing experience and an experience that no longer feels like it was built in 2009 as a direct copy of an iPhone app.

It has definitely been built with some of the new Android theme guidelines, including the side panel for additional options, and category options that can be accessed with a swipe at the top. Your ?My Teams? tab still sits in the number 1 spot, followed by top events, videos, and big headlines.

It?ll take some getting used to, but it should make for accessing information from different sports much easier. In the past, you had to either pull up the bottom menu or swipe from column to column to access the non-major headlines. Now, a couple of quick taps get you there.?

Amoxicillin No Help For Sinus Infections, Study Finds

By Katherine Harmon
(Click here for the original article)

When I was growing up in the 1980s and '90s with two younger brothers, the antibiotic amoxicillin was a frequent guest in our house. Strep throat, sinus infections, sore throats, coughs; we all remember that thick, pink, bubble gum-flavored liquid perhaps a little too well. But this popular drug, like many antibiotics, is overprescribed--often given for illnesses that it will not help, such as viral infections. A new study shows that it is indeed no more helpful than a placebo in treating patients with a non-pneumonia lower respiratory tract infection, such as a nagging cough.

The research complements a paper published in February in JAMA, The Journal of the American Medical Association, that found that amoxicillin (know by names such as Amoxil, Alphamox, Dispermox, Trimox and others) is not effective in treating sinus infections when tested against a placebo.

For the new study, published online December 18 in The Lancet Infectious Diseases, researchers recruited 2,061 patients 18 years and older (across a dozen European countries) who went to their doctor for a lower-respiratory infection that was not suspected to be pneumonia and had a cough lasting fewer than four weeks. Half of the hackers were randomly assigned to receive amoxicillin and the other half received a placebo. Both groups were instructed to take their medication three times a day for seven days; and neither the patients nor clinicians knew which treatment was which. Participating patients received follow-up phone interviews and completed daily diary entries for symptoms (detailing, for example, cough, phlegm, runny nose, headaches, feeling unwell, etc.) as well as for side effects (including diarrhea, rashes, vomiting, etc.) for up to four weeks.

The severity or length of moderate or intense symptoms was about the same for both the antibiotic and placebo groups. And there was only a slightly higher rate of new or worsening symptoms for those patients taking a placebo (19.3 percent) than for those taking the antibiotic (15.9 percent). The findings held even in patients 60 and older, who have been thought to benefit more from antibiotic treatment for such infections.

"Patients given amoxicillin don't recover much quicker or have significantly fewer symptoms," said Paul Little, of Primary Care and Population Sciences Division at the University of Southampton in the U.K., and co-author on the new study, in a prepared statement. "Our results show that most people get better on their own."

What's more, the study showed that more people taking the amoxicillin (which is in the penicillin family) experienced side effects such as diarrhea, rashes and/or vomiting than those taking the placebo.

The findings "should encourage physicians in primary care to refrain from antibiotic treatment in low-risk patients," said Philipp Schuetz of the Medical University Department Kantonsspital Aarau in Switzerland in a prepared statement. Schuetz wrote an essay published in the same issue of The Lancet Infectious Diseases. For the subset of patients for whom the drug appeared to have had a slight benefit, researchers could now begin looking to see what might set them--or their infections--apart. "Guidance from measurements of specific blood biomarkers of bacterial infection might help to identify the few individuals who will benefit from antibiotics despite the apparent absence of pneumonia and avoid the toxic effects and costs of those drugs," Schuetz said.

Amoxicillin is the eighth most commonly prescribed drug in the U.S., with some 52.3 million prescriptions written each year, according to the IMS research group's Institute for Healthcare Informatics' 2011 report. Its patent has expired, so generic versions of this drug have made it exceptionally affordable--often less than $25 per course even without insurance. Uncomplicated lower respiratory tract infections, such as the ones being tracked in the study, are often caused by viruses, which are not susceptible to antibiotics. But doctors are often not able to identify a virus immediately--especially in rushed and resource-strained clinical settings--leading physicians to often prescribe antibiotics as a cautionary measure.

This drug habit, however, might be doing more harm than good. "Using amoxicillin to treat respiratory infections in patients not suspected of having pneumonia is not likely to help and could be harmful," Little said. "Overuse of antibiotics--which is dominated by primary care prescribing--particularly when they are ineffective, can lead to side effects--e.g. diarrhea, rash vomiting--and the development of resistance."

The biggest hurdle might now be explaining to patients that these familiar drugs are not actually helping any better than a sugar pill would. "It is difficult to convince patients and their physicians against antibiotic use," Schuetz wrote. But the new findings should help convince everyone to think twice before starting an antibiotic prescription.

This new study also underscores the natural lengthiness of lower respiratory tract infections. A person might be infected for more than a week before showing symptoms. The severe symptoms can, themselves, last for a week, and gradually improving symptoms can linger for much longer. So in the case of these ailments, perhaps time itself is the best treatment.

Nokia reportedly 'in talks' to build 10-inch Windows RT slate with Qualcomm and Compal

Nokia reportedly 'in talks' to build 10inch Windows RT slate with help from Compal and Qualcomm

There's been no shortage of chin-wagging about a Nokia slate in the past, but needless to say it's never amounted to much. In fact, the murmurs and patent applications largely died away prior to the coming of Windows RT, leading us to conclude that the Finnish manufacturer had decided to step back from the tablet tussle rather than wade in. That said, Digitimes is now reporting that Nokia is once again "talking" to hardware partners -- namely Qualcomm and Compal -- about developing a Windows RT device. Mobilegeeks and our own sources have stepped up to support the gist of this report, although they didn't go nearly as far as Digitimes in claiming that a 10-inch product would be done and dusted in time for MWC, which means we're left with nothing concrete. One thing does seem likely: Surface may not be selling well enough, despite its merits, which potentially creates room for another Microsoft-aligned manufacturer to carry the RT baton forward.

Google's Field Trip app now available in the UK

Android Central

Following on from some other recent Field Trip updates, the app is now available in the UK. Field Trip is a Google-created app designed to highlight local points of interest, popping up notifications while you're out and about, and allowing you to browse through nearby places on a map, or based on location.

Previously limited to the U.S., Field Trip's UK debut is the latest in a series of UK launches for previously U.S.-only Google products, such as Play Music and Play Magazines.

Right now, the usefulness of Field Trip to Android phone owners in the UK will depend on where in the country they live. London is pretty well-documented, with cards for restaurants, venues, historical sites and other attractions densely populating the center of the capital. However other UK cities are looking much more sparse at the moment, so hopefully Google will continue fleshing things out in the weeks ahead.

Brits can grab the latest version of Field Trip for Android at the Google Play link above. You'll need Android 2.3 Gingerbread or higher to get in on the location-aware action.

Fidel Castro named candidate for Cuban National Assembly

HAVANA (Reuters) - Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro's political career may go on for a while, at least symbolically, even though he no longer holds the country's top political positions.

He is still a member of the National Assembly and on Sunday was nominated for another term, despite not having attended any regular sessions during the current legislature and the fact that he is rarely seen or heard from anymore.

Elections for a single slate of deputies for the single chamber legislature are held every five years, with the candidates nominated by municipal governments after selection by commissions.

The election is scheduled for February 3, 2013.

"The leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz, will head up the representation of 25 candidates to the Cuban parliament for the Santiago de Cuba municipality," Cuban television said on Sunday.

Castro, 86, handed over the presidency to his brother Raul in 2008, and the younger brother, 81, succeeded him as First Secretary of the Cuban Communist Party in 2011.

The elder Castro underwent life-threatening intestinal surgery in 2006, from which he never fully recovered.

Castro nevertheless was elected to the National Assembly in 2008, his seat on the podium next to his brother Raul remaining empty ever since.

Raul Castro was also nominated as a deputy on Sunday. To formally remain president he must be a deputy in the assembly.

The municipal councilors in Santiago de Cuba unanimously approved the brothers' nominations. Since 1976, they have represented Santiago, the cradle of their revolution.

At its first session in February, the National Assembly must ratify the country's top political jobs.

Fidel Castro last appeared in official photographs in October, when he was shown walking outside on a sunny day on what appeared to be a farm.

He wore a straw hat and red plaid shirt, and used a walking cane.

The pictures were published to squash rumors he was dead or dying because in June he abruptly stopped writing the regular columns he had published in the official media since taking ill.

An article, written by Castro and which accompanied the photographs, announced he had given up his local media columns.

"I stopped publishing 'Reflections' because surely it is not my role to occupy the pages of our press, dedicated to other work the country requires," he said.

As for how he spends his time now, Castro wrote, "I like to write, and I write. I like to study, and I study."

Castro wrote a message to the Venezuelan people on Saturday, in which he hailed his prot?g? and the South American country's president, Hugo Chavez.

Chavez is currently recovering from a fourth cancer operation in Cuba amidst speculation he will not be able to begin a new term as president in January, after winning re-election in October.

USA NEWS BRIEF? 5 Small Business Accounting Tips

Having your own small business can afford you many benefits, but it also comes with a large share of responsibilities. One of the most important responsibilities of a small business owner is accounting. Efficient accounting can mean the difference between saving potentially thousands of dollars, or losing funds without really understanding why. Some business owners utilize the services of an external accountant to handle the business? accounting needs, but if you choose to do it yourself, you might want to read these tips, designed to help you improve efficiency and save money.

    1. Be Organized

In order to ensure efficient and proper accounting, you need to make sure you have everything properly organized, from receipts to expense reports to invoices to weekly payouts of salaries. Organize all items in a filing cabinet, using a thorough system that makes it easy to find exactly what you are looking for, when you need to find it. Don?t just simply stuff everything into one folder?keep receipts separate from utility bills, and so forth.

Advanced accounting software is extremely cost-effective. Provided you consistently enter information into the software in a timely fashion, you?ll be able to keep track of absolutely every penny and quickly find information with a few clicks of the mouse.

    2. Use Cash

Cash is neater, both for you and for vendors or suppliers. There re specific benefits to cash accounting, such as being able to eliminate extra bills for interest or additional invoices, and making it much easier to quickly determine your profit margin. When using cash, you?ll typically only have to file receipts. Additionally, deposit cash into your account right away so that it can recorded and counted quickly.

    3. Request Detailed Bank Account Statements

Getting a bank account statement once a month is a great way to double-check your own records. You?ll also know if you still have any checks that outstanding so that you can make a more accurate count of funds available in the following month. Checking your bank account statement on a monthly basis will also make you aware of any unauthorized or suspicious activity with your account.

    4. Schedule Time for Accounting

Many business owners put off performing accounting tasks until the end of each month, or even longer, and then find themselves with a large amount of often confusing and tedious work to do. By scheduling time to record transactions, perform filing duties and enter accounting information into your accounting software at least once a week, you?ll stay more organized and efficient. You?ll also be able to keep better track of bills needing to be paid, or outstanding invoices that are due soon or already overdue.

    5. Keep Backups

In addition to ensuring your computer software and accounting information is backed up each day, you?ll also want to keep all paperwork. This will help in case you need to double-check some figures at some point in the future, as well as enable you to check if everything has been entered correctly. Keeping all your paperwork and records organized is also useful for internal audits. Additionally, keeping invoices and checks in dated or numerical sequence also improves organization and efficiency.

The IRS also sometimes requires you to furnish records or receipts, and having everything already well organized will save you the hassle of tying to locate and organize a bunch of records in short notice.

EU leaders promise further steps to quell crisis

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - European leaders agreed to press on with further steps to shore up their finances and sustain momentum in tackling the debt crisis on Friday, a day after clinching a deal on banking supervision and approving long-delayed aid to Greece.

After more than eight hours of late-night talks at a summit in Brussels, leaders promised to push ahead with setting up a mechanism to wind down problem banks, although it was unclear when the facility would be completed.

They also launched tentative discussions on how to make countries stick to economic targets and on creating a "solidarity fund" to help member states suffering one-off economic shocks, but did not delve deeply into either issue, pushing the debate out to the middle of next year.

With officials concerned about complacency creeping into decision-making now that financial markets have calmed and the crisis seems less acute, leaders appeared intent on showing that they are not relaxing.

That said, no concrete decisions were taken at the summit. Instead, it was more about verbal commitments to push ahead.

"This evening we decided to put in place a single resolution mechanism," Herman Van Rompuy, the president of the European Council and chairman of the summit, told a news conference.

The European Commission will present a proposal on the mechanism, which would wind-up troubled banks by keeping the good parts alive while the unhealthy operations are shut down, during 2013, Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said.

French President Francois Hollande told reporters the mechanism would "see the light of day" during the year, but it was not clear whether he expected it to be functioning by then or merely be in the early stages of construction.

"We agreed a roadmap for the future development of the currency union," said German Chancellor Angela Merkel, without going into detail about the discussions.

The two-day summit, the sixth and last of 2012, had only ever been intended to be a detailed discussion on how best to overhaul economic and monetary union and correct the problems that have fuelled three years of debt crisis.

The meeting was held just hours after EU finance ministers achieved a significant breakthrough in negotiations over a 'banking union' by agreeing that the European Central Bank would be made the chief supervisor of euro zone banks.

That decision, and another by euro zone ministers to release up to 50 billion euros in new aid to Greece, marked two positive developments after a long year of crisis-management and took some of the pressure off leaders to make major strides.

    "CASSANDRAS"

ECB President Mario Draghi hailed the deal on banking supervision, the first stage towards a banking union with more pooled sovereignty, as an important step towards a stable economic and monetary union.

Under the deal, officials said the ECB would regulate some 150 to 200 banks directly - all major cross-border lenders and state aided institutions - with the power to delve into all 6,000 banks in case of problems.

Olli Rehn, the EU commissioner for economic and monetary affairs, said "Cassandras" who had predicted disaster for the euro and a Greek exit had been proven wrong.

But there is little time to relax. The next stages of banking union - creating a resolution fund for winding up troubled banks and coordinating deposit guarantees to protect savers - may be fought over even harder. And then there will be political and financial hurdles to negotiate through the year.

"The fact that the situation in the financial markets is now better than before should not be seen by the governments as a way to procrastinate," European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso told reporters.

Much of southern Europe faces another year of grinding recession with record unemployment and deepening poverty that will tear at the fabric of wounded societies and may push governments' efforts to reduce deficits further off course.

With Silvio Berlusconi vowing to contest an Italian election early next year, a full bailout of Spain still on the cards and a German election in September casting a long shadow, 2013 promises to be the EU's fourth turbulent year in a row, even without risks from bailout victims Greece, Ireland and Portugal.

Italy is a particular concern if the next government rows back on any of the economic reforms put in place by technocrat Prime Minister Mario Monti, whose time in office has helped stabilize financial markets and stave off the crisis.

Several participants at a pre-summit meeting of center-right leaders in Brussels urged Monti to stand as a candidate in an election expected in February, but he gave no indication of his intentions, a person at the meeting said.

Many European leaders fear a return of the erratic billionaire Berlusconi, who abruptly changed course on Wednesday, saying he would step aside if Monti agreed to lead the center-right into the election.

Green Blog: Weighing In on N.Y.'s Fracking Rules

As the administration of Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo inches toward a decision on whether to allow fracking in New York State, it has opened a 30-day period for public comment on proposed regulations that would govern fracking.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation released the draft regulations at the end of November, but any decision on drilling also awaits completion of an extensive review of the potential environmental impacts of the drilling process, known as hydraulic fracturing, or fracking.

That review includes an examination of possible health consequences by the state health commissioner, Dr. Nirav Shah, and outside experts that is still under way. Environmental regulators requested a 90-day extension to complete their rule-making, so the administration is now expected to make a decision by Feb. 27.

But if the state decides that hydraulic fracturing cannot be done safely, ?these regulations will not have any practical effect and the process will not go forward,? the Department of Environmental Conservation said in a statement.

Comments on the draft regulations can be filed through Jan. 11 at the Web site of the Department of Environmental Conservation, or by writing to the department at 625 Broadway, Albany, N.Y., 12233-6510.

After a lengthy certification delay, mLogic's mLink PCIe Thunderbolt expansion chassis is now up for grabs. The device branches to any Mac computer equipped with the high-speed port, allowing you to install a half-length PCIe board -- opening up a world of RAID storage, high speed networking and video capture to otherwise slotless Minis or Macbooks. The company says it's now in stock and shipping for $399, and added that it made good use of the lag time for more extensive thermal and EMI testing. A special Red Rocket model is supposed to follow along at $699 for RED cinema camera RAW video conversion duties, but if plain old 2K or HD video is good enough, hit the source to get it.

Mali's PM forced to resign, after arrest by junta

BAMAKO, Mali (AP) ? Soldiers arrested Mali's prime minister and forced him to resign before dawn on Tuesday, showing that the military remains the real power in this troubled West African nation despite handing back authority to civilians after a coup in March.

The prime minister's ouster comes as the United Nations considers backing a military intervention in Mali, a once-stable country now in constant turmoil. By late Tuesday, a new prime minister had been named, but the developments drew international rebuke and raised questions about the viability of the military operation, which would use the country's military to try to take back Mali's north from Islamic extremists.

Prime Minister Cheikh Modibo Diarra, dressed in a dark suit, his expression somber, appeared on state television at 4 a.m. to announce his resignation, hours after soldiers stormed his house.

"Our country is living through a period of crisis. Men and women who are worried about the future of our nation are hoping for peace," he said on television. "It's for this reason that I, Cheikh Modibo Diarra, am resigning along with my entire government on this day, Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012. I apologize before the entire population of Mali."

The 60-year-old Diarra is a NASA astrophysicist who has contributed to numerous space exploration missions including the Magellan probe to Venus and the Galileo spacecraft to Jupiter. He is now under house arrest, said a spokesman for the junta, Bakary Mariko.

The government remains technically under the control of the interim president, Dioncounda Traore, who waited nearly 24 hours after Diarra's arrest to address the nation. Late Tuesday, he issued a decree naming a longtime civil servant, Django Sissoko, as the new prime minister. And in an oblique speech, he spoke of the need for Mali to remain united in its goal of reconquering the north and installing democracy, never mentioning the military.

The shake-up in Bamako is already looking like it may endanger plans for the military intervention. The African Union is proposing sending several thousand African troops to help the Malian military take back the north, which fell to al-Qaida-linked Islamists in the chaos that followed the March 21 coup.

The military's meddling in state affairs has concerned the international community. Many worry that supporting the operation will simply further arm and embolden the very officers responsible for Mali's current state.

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle warned Tuesday that Diarra's forced resignation makes Western countries wary of getting involved in a military incursion.

"One thing is clear: Our offers of help come with the condition that the process of restoring constitutional order in Mali be conducted credibly," he said.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland called Diarra's arrest a setback for Mali. "We need Sanogo and his brothers-in-arms to stay out of politics," she told reporters, referring to coup leader Capt. Amadou Haya Sanogo.

The U.N. Security Council threatened to impose sanctions against those blocking a return to constitutional order in Mali and called on the armed forces to stop interfering in state affairs.

The now-ousted prime minister was arrested between 10 and 11 p.m. Monday at his home by the military, who drove him the Kati military camp, the sprawling base where the March 21 coup was launched.

Late Tuesday, Sanogo said on state television that he had no regrets over the prime minister's resignation. But he denied that the military forced him out, saying simply that his soldiers "facilitated" his departure.

At the moment of his arrest, the aging leader was getting ready to leave for the airport for a medical trip to Paris, said a police officer who was on duty at the airport and who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press.

"The plane that was to take the prime minister to France was on the point of departure," said the policeman. "It was stopped by people from the Yerewoloton group who invaded the airport," he said.

Yerewoloton is a civic group believed to be backed by the junta which has carried out violent actions on the military's behalf. This same group in May invaded the presidential palace and beat Traore, the interim president, until he lost consciousness.

That incident brought the international community down like a hammer on Mali's junta. Sanogo signed an accord agreeing to step down and retreated from public life. Despite his retreat, there were numerous signs suggesting that the junta still called the shots in Bamako.

On state television Tuesday, Sanogo accused Diarra of pursuing his personal ambitions rather than the good of the country.

"We didn't force him. We facilitated (his resignation). A few weeks ago, he himself told us that if we really wanted him to leave, that he would hand in (his resignation) but not to the president of the republic, nor to any other authority ? only to us," said Sanogo. "Yesterday we realized that it was really necessary for him to resign. And it's for this reason that we brought him to Kati."

Human Rights Watch's senior researcher for West Africa, Corinne Dufka, said the events fit with the pattern of abuse by soldiers since the coup eight months ago.

"They've arrested, beaten and intimidated journalists; tortured and disappeared military rivals; and now, apparently, arbitrarily detained the prime minister. None of these incidents have been investigated and those responsible appear to have been emboldened by the shameful lack of accountability," Dufka said.

Bamako remained calm Tuesday, despite waking up to what is being called a "mini-coup." People went about their daily lives, yet with a sense of disappointment in this nation once held up as a model democracy in Africa.

"I really am struggling to understand ? so if the prime minister is not doing his job properly, it's up to the junta to come and arrest him?" said Aboubacrine Assadek Ag Hamahady, a university professor. "Based on what law, on what legal text can the junta justify this arrest?"

Nintendo moves over 300K Wii U consoles in Japan after first week

Wii U seventh alltime console launch in Japan with 308,570 units

Nintendo had a so-so stateside Wii U debut, but with 300,000 units chalked up after a week in Japan, it's become the seventh best hardware launch in that country, according to Famitsu and Enterbrain. Games selling well alongside the device include evergreen Super Mario, which tagged along to the tune of 170k units, while Monster Hunter rang up 110k titles. All that is a modestly successful debut for the console at home so far, considering that its more revolutionary predecessor became a monster hit after selling a fourth-best 370,000 copies during its first week in the island nation. On the other hand, Sony's PS Vita also racked up decent early numbers, and we all know how that turned out.

JPMorgan names new regional banking heads: memo

LONDON (Reuters) - U.S. bank JPMorgan has appointed Viswas Raghavan as head of banking in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), according to a memo seen by Reuters.

The appointment comes as JPMorgan recasts responsibilities for some of its top investment and corporate banking executives after a move in July to combine two key business segments.

Raghavan, who joined the bank in 2000, was most recently global head of equity capital markets (ECM), responsible for share sales including initial public offerings and rights issues.

Alejandro Guevara and Lisandro Miguens, meanwhile, become co-heads of banking for Latin America, with Tom DuCharme and Therese Esperdy co-heads of banking in Asia Pacific, the memo said.

Each will be responsible for client coverage across investment banking, corporate banking and treasury services for their region and will report to Jeff Urwin, global head of investment banking, and Don McCree, global head of treasury services and corporate banking.

"We have been working towards this for some time. What we have done is put together all the client coverage under one umbrella," Raghavan told Reuters after the appointment was announced at the bank. "Each of these businesses (investment banking, corporate banking and treasury services) serve the same clients. It is a holistic way of being organized around the client."

JPMorgan Chief Executive Jamie Dimon has made growth outside the United States a key priority for the bank, which is the largest lender in its home market.

"We are really focused on improving our market share and increasing our footprint in Europe," Raghavan said of his new role.

In the memo, the bank also announced that Todd Marin would become vice-chairman of investment banking in Asia Pacific.

Liz Myers, who has been with the bank for 20 years, most recently head of ECM for the Americas, will succeed Raghavan as global head of ECM, according to a separate memo.

No. 2 Alabama places 4 on AP All-America team

NEW YORK (AP) ? Alabama is No. 1 when it comes to All-Americans.

The second-ranked Crimson Tide placed four players on The Associated Press All-America team released Tuesday. Among them was center Barrett Jones, who became a two-time first-team selection.

No other team had more than two players selected to the first team. The Tide also led with six players chosen to all three teams.

Notre Dame, Texas A&M, Stanford and Florida were second with four players on the three teams, though linebacker Manti Te'o was the only Fighting Irish player to make the first team.

Alabama faces top-ranked Notre Dame in the BCS championship game Jan. 7.

Texas A&M Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel was the first-team quarterback.

Wisconsin running back Montee Ball and Georgia linebacker Jarvis Jones also became two-time All-Americans.

Nine Southeastern Conference players made the first team, more than any other conference. The Pac-12 was second with six players on the first team. No other conference had more than two.

The team was voted on by a panel of 16 AP college football poll voters.

Barrett Jones, a senior who made the All-America team as a tackle last season, was joined on the first team by Alabama teammates guard Chance Warmack, linebacker C.J. Mosley and cornerback Dee Milliner. Offensive tackle D.J. Fluker was picked to the second team and quarterback AJ McCarron was selected to the third team.

Te'o, the Heisman finalists and winner of seven other awards ? including the Maxwell, Nagurski and Butkus ? is the first Notre Dame defensive player to be an AP All-American since defensive back Shane Walton in 2002.

Manziel is the first freshman to make the first team at quarterback. On Saturday, the redshirt freshman know as Johnny Football became the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy.

Manziel set an SEC record with 4,600 total yards to rank second in the nation.

Heisman finalist Collin Klein of Kansas State was the second-team quarterback.

Ball repeated as an All-American, despite a slow start to the season and some early injuries. The senior is seventh in the nation in rushing at 133 yards per game, scored 21 touchdowns, and set the major college football record for career touchdowns. He has 82 going into the Rose Bowl.

Arizona's Ka'Deem Carey, the nation's leading rusher at 146 yards per game, was the other first-team running back.

The receivers were Southern California's Marqise Lee, who leads the nation in catches (112) and was second in yards receiving (1,680), and Baylor's Terrance Williams, who leads in yards with 1,764.

Stanford's Zach Ertz was the tight end.

Joining Jones and Warmack on the offensive line were two junior tackles projected to be high first-round NFL draft picks: Texas A&M's Luke Joeckel and Michigan's Taylor Lewan.

"Team goals are bigger than individual goals, but one of my personal goals was to be an All-American and it's an unbelievable feeling to reach that goal," Lewan said Tuesday.

North Carolina's Jonathan Cooper was the other first-team guard.

West Virginia's Tavon Austin was selected as the all-purpose player, a perfect description of the do-it-all speedster.
