SEOUL, South Korea?? Samsung Electronics Co., the world's top mobile phone maker, said Monday it expects global sales of the latest Galaxy smartphone to surpass 10 million in July even as it struggles to keep up with demand because of component shortages.
Shin Jong-kyun, president of Samsung's mobile communications business, said the Galaxy S III will hit the 10-million milestone within two months of its launch.
"It has been tough to keep up with demand," Shin told reporters.
Samsung's failure to procure sufficient mobile components for its latest smartphone has stoked concerns that its second-quarter smartphone sales could be much lower than expected. Shin said the company expects to resolve the supply issues with mobile components sometime in the next week.
"Despite the tough economic situation in Europe and problems with supplying components for the Galaxy S III, the second-quarter earnings will be better than the first quarter," he said.
Shares of Samsung tumbled 4.2 percent on the Seoul bourse on Monday, closing at a four-month low. The benchmark Kospi index fell 1.2 percent.
Samsung began sales of the Galaxy S III in Europe on May 29 and released the smartphone through all major mobile U.S. carriers last week. In its home market, the company started sales of the latest iteration of Galaxy earlier Monday.
Samsung's sales estimate for the S III reflects robust demand from mobile operators. Unlike Apple Inc., Samsung does not disclose sales figures to consumers.
The South Korean company said the S III will be released by around 300 mobile carriers in 147 countries by the end of July, aiming for an early start before rival Apple announces a new version of the iPhone in the third quarter.
The third version of the Galaxy S features a bigger screen ? measured 4.8-inch diagonally ? but is thinner and lighter than its predecessors and the iPhone 4S.
Samsung packed the high-end smartphone with a legion of new features including eye-recognition technology that keeps the screen from dimming. It also has voice command functions that let users schedule an alarm or adjust volume by speaking to their device.
Its near-field communication technology enables sharing of data heavy multimedia content among Galaxy S III users quickly. But activating the function ? called S Beam ? takes multiple steps.
Because Samsung customizes its flagship smartphone based on Google's Android operating system, some of Samsung's features overlap with those made by Google.
Separately, Samsung's mobile president said it is still investigating the explosion of a Galaxy S III in Ireland. He said the battery wasn't the cause.
Samsung overtook Nokia as the world's biggest mobile-phone maker in 2011 and competes with Apple for the top smartphone maker position. It aims to double its smartphone sales this year to nearly 200 million phones.

ELLIOT LAKE, Ontario (AP) ? Rescue teams and dogs searched through the rubble Sunday at a shopping mall in Canada where a roof collapsed through two floors, leaving several people missing and 22 people slightly injured.
Authorities said no casualties have been reported and the names of the missing continue to be crossed off the list as members of the community account for their loved ones. But a number of people remain unaccounted for since the collapse Saturday afternoon at Algo Centre Mall in the northern Ontario city of Elliott Lake.
Stephan Powell of Toronto Fire Services said 40 members of the Heavy Urban Search and Rescue team were removing pieces of the structure in an effort to extricate anyone who might have been trapped.
Kate Matuszewski, a spokeswoman for city, said emergency services were removed at one point Saturday due to safety issues.
Ontario Provincial Police Inspector Percy Jollymore urged anyone worried about missing loved ones to check in at an information center where police are tracking those who are unaccounted for.
A portion of the roof that serves as a parking area crumbled down two floors into an area near the food court, exposing metal and concrete supports. The collapse left behind a gaping hole which was 12 meters (39 feet) by 24 meters (79 feet), downed hydro lines and triggered a gas leak.
Emergency officials quickly cleared out the mall and closed surrounding roads. Mayor Rick Hamilton declared a state of emergency.
Ontario Provincial Police said 22 people were taken to hospital but none were seriously hurt.
Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty said he was in touch with Elliot Lake's mayor and thanked emergency crews in the city for their efforts.
"As we anxiously wait to learn more about anyone thought to be missing in Elliot Lake, our thoughts and prayers are with their families, and also with those who have been injured and indeed with the entire community," McGuinty said in a statement.
Joe Drazil, a Zellers store employee, said several cars appeared to have fallen through the gaping hole near some escalators.
"You can see the roof with the cars hanging inside," he said. "Everybody was cleared from the whole mall. After that, there was numerous police and emergency vehicles coming from all over."
Shopper Jean-Marc Hayward was having coffee when the roof collapsed about 20 feet (6 meters) from him. He said a big hunk of concrete tumbled down through two floors and that it sounded like an explosion. "It was a big loud crash. It didn't just go down one floor it went down two floors," he said.
Hayward said a lottery terminal kiosk was located directly under the roof that caved in.
Hayward said he saw one man with a bloody face. Hayward, a dwarf who has trouble with his legs, said he couldn't run out.
"I was sucking in dust," he said.
Hayward and others have said the mall roof has leaked water for some time. There have long been buckets and tarps around the mall to collect leaking water, Hayward said.
"It's obvious there has been a lot of damage in the structure because of the water," Hayward said. "A couple of years ago they said they fixed all the leaks in the mall, but they didn't. You could tell every time it rained."
Powell could not confirm if rescue officials had been briefed about the water leaking issue.
The two-level mall in this northern Ontario community is approximately 200,000 square feet (18,580 sq. meters). It houses a grocery store, restaurants, a number of retail outlets, a hotel, and the constituency office for a member of the provincial parliament.
Rhonda Bear, a spokeswoman for the mall, which is run by Eastwood Mall Incorporated, said the company was referring all questions on the collapse and the condition of the mall to its lawyer, who could not immediately be reached for comment.
"All our concern right now is our prayers are with the families," Bear said.

How often have you gotten an email from a troubled?prince, a long-lost relative or a distressed damsel, and instantly sent it to the trash? You know the type of message I'm talking about?? a?typo-filled pile of run-on sentences which offers you riches in exchange for your help. You probably immediately recognize such notes to be some sort of scam ... and as?do most people.
So why don't scammers try to write better, more convincing emails?
Because the lousy ones?help them pick out the best targets.
Computerworld's Rothan Pearce calls attention to a research paper by Cormac Herley, principal researcher at Microsoft Research's Machine Learning Department, which explains how it all works. The paper's pretty full of math and will likely give you a headache ??or require you to re-read it several times for comprehension?? but it boils down to this:?"By sending an email that repels all but the most?gullible the scammer gets the most promising marks to?self-select."
Emails which are poorly written or identify the sender as a resident of Nigeria ??a country often associated with certain scams?? weed out the skeptics, the people who wouldn't easily believe that a stranger would send them millions in exchange for a small fee.
This means that the scammers can focus on the folks who are most likely to suspend disbelief and proceed to lure them into their schemes (which is an effort intensive process). Using transparent emails for the initial contact keeps the scammers from wasting time communicating with potential victims who'd see through their lies before it's too late.
So what lesson can we take from this? That we shouldn't underestimate the folks who are looking to scam us. There's?definitely?reason to their apparent madness.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. builders started work on more single-family homes in May and requested the most permits to build homes and apartments in three and a half years. The increase suggests the housing market is slowly recovering even as other areas of the economy have weakened.
The Commerce Department said Tuesday that builders broke ground on 3.2 percent more single-family homes in May, the third straight monthly increase.
Overall housing starts fell 4.8 percent last month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 708,000. But that was entirely because of a 21.3 percent plunge in apartment construction, which can be volatile from month to month.
The government also said April was much better for housing starts than first thought. The government revised the April starts to 744,000 ? up from an initially reported 717,000 and the fastest building pace since October 2008.
And builders are more optimistic about the next 12 months. They requested more permits to build homes, a gauge of future construction. Permits increased to a seasonally adjusted rate of 780,000 ? the most since September 2008.
Even with the gains, the rate of construction and the level of permits requested remain roughly half the pace considered healthy. Yet the increases add to other signs that the home market may finally be starting to recover nearly five years after the housing bubble burst.
The mostly positive report contributed to a strong opening on Wall Street, although much of the rally was driven by expectations that the Federal Reserve will take action this week to jumpstart the economy.
The yield on the 10-year Treasury note ticked higher after the report was released. Stocks also increased ? the Dow Jones industrial average rose more than 122 points in midday trading.
Builders have grown more confident since last fall, in part because more people are expressing an interest in buying a home. Cheaper mortgages and lower home prices in many markets have made home buying more attractive. Many economists believe that housing construction could contribute to overall economic growth this year for the first time since 2005.
"We continue to expect housing activity to increase gradually in coming months and residential investment to make a positive ... contribution to GDP growth," said Peter Newland of Barclays
By region of the country, housing starts rose 14.4 percent in the West, but dropped in other parts of the country. The declines primarily reflected the weakness in apartment activity.
Still, the pace of home sales remains well below healthy levels. Economists say it could be years before the market is fully healed.
Many people are still having difficulty qualifying for home loans or can't afford larger down payments required by banks. Some would-be home buyers are holding off because they fear that home prices could keep falling.
The economy is growing only modestly and job creation slowed sharply in April and May. U.S. employers created only 69,000 jobs in May, the fewest in a year.
Though new homes represent just 20 percent of the overall home market, they have an outsize impact on the economy. Each home built creates an average of three jobs for a year and generates about $90,000 in taxes, according to data from the Home Builders.

In 'Reasons to be Pretty,' Greg's tight-knit social circle is thrown into turmoil when his offhand remarks about a female coworker's pretty face and his own girlfriend Steph's lack thereof get back to Steph. But that's just the beginning. Greg's best buddy, Kent, and Kent's wife, Carly, also enter into the picture, and the emotional equation becomes exponentially more complicated.
